A low-income family from the town of La Bebida, Argentina has welcomed its newest member with overflowing love despite the child’s dramatic origin. The baby, who is now the most spoiled child in the neighborhood, was conceived through rape.
The identity of the mother, who is mentally disabled, remains undisclosed. Her three-week-old baby has become her greatest joy, and despite their limited income, the grandparents say the child will always have everything he needs.
The newspaper El Diario de Cuyo recently published a story on the family.
According to the newspaper, the baby boy “possesses a unique magnetism. Everybody (family and neighbors) smile when they see him, they all want to spoil him, they all seem grateful for his presence.”
“Perhaps seeing him in the arms of his mother, a 23-year-old woman with an unabashed smile, is also moving because she is somebody special: her mental disability is so severe that a neurologist puts it in these stark terms: ‘She is 80 percent totally and permanently handicapped’,” the newspaper reported.
The family’s tragedy became known when the young woman was five months pregnant. “When her mother (who has seven other children) saw her bulging womb, asked who had done that her.”
“(T)he woman pointed to her brother-in-law as the one responsible for the assault.”
The rape caused division in the family, but “the news of the pregnancy caused a very different reaction: neighbors began to bring them baby clothes and offered to help the young mother, who is much loved in the neighborhood.”
Hilda, the woman’s mother, said the family survives on social security and her husband’s odd jobs, but that the baby is never without the things he needs.
According to the website ArgentinosAlerta.org, the story has moved Argentineans and shown “how a new life has overcome so many obstacles and brought joy not only to one family but to an entire community that has embraced this baby with great affection.”
“We lament all of the violence that is part of rape and we hope that the guilty person is found and quickly brought to justice. The affectionate way in which this family and the community have embraced this child is truly exemplary,” the website said.
